The Ashburton Courier IN TRADE

Registered Nurse – Refugee Settlement Service

In July of 2020, the Government increased the annual refugee quota, identifying Ashburton as one of five new settlement locations and awarding Safer Mid Canterbury the Settlement Services contract.

Former Afghan refugees began settling in Ashburton from 2021, and we now have a vibrant Afghan community in the district. Over this time, Safer Mid Canterbury has developed a comprehensive refugee service with a full team of highly skilled and dedicated staff. We currently have two bilingual health navigators in our Health Team and have now been contracted by Pegasus Health to employ a Registered Nurse.

What you will be doing

  • Contributing to equitable health outcomes for former refugees resettled in Ashburton.
  • Connecting former refugees resettling in the Ashburton area to primary care.
  • Supporting Ashburton primary care practices enrolling former refugees.
  • Working with the wider Ashburton resettlement support team, supporting Ashburton General Practice teams to develop their capacity to provide culturally responsive, quality health care to former refugees, and work in an integrated way with other health, wellbeing, and wraparound services.
  • Health promotion activities and programmes with former refugees.

What you will bring

Required experience and qualifications:

  • New Zealand Registered Nurse with current annual practicing certificate.
  • 3 years primary health experience or other relevant role.
  • Experience in working with people from other cultures and linguistic backgrounds.
  • The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • IT skills (word processing, emails, maintaining client databases).
  • Communication skills in person and on the phone. Confidence in working with an interpreter a plus.

We would also like to know if you have:

  • Experience in working with former refugees in Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.
  • Experience and training in mental health, grief counselling, tropical medicine, health promotion, and/or women’s health.

Safer Mid Canterbury is working in partnership with Pegasus Health, who will provide clinical oversight and opportunities for regular training allowing you to maintain your registration.

This is a permanent position of 20 hours per week, with some flexibility required around when the hours will be worked. In return, we offer a supportive, flexible and family-friendly work environment and the opportunity to make a real and significant long term difference for former refugees in Ashburton. If this sounds like you, then we would love to hear from you.
