Help shape the future of fresh water in the Upper Clutha.

WAI Wanaka is a charitable trust with a clear purpose: to accelerate action for freshwater. WAI Wanaka is seeking a Trustee with expertise in freshwater science and research who is motivated to contribute to better outcomes for waterways and community wellbeing in the Upper Clutha. 

This role offers a unique opportunity to influence freshwater outcomes at scale and to support a skilled team delivering impactful, evidence-based education and community programmes across the Upper Clutha. 

About the role

You will bring technical insight, professional networks, and a strong desire to apply your knowledge to real-world environmental challenges. You will help guide strategy, strengthen the use of science in decision-making, and support WAI Wanaka to deliver the best possible outcomes for freshwater and community wellbeing.

We are looking for individuals who:

• Bring expertise in areas such as freshwater ecology, hydrology, limnology, biogeochemistry, matauranga Maori, catchment science, social science, biodiversity or ecosystem health
• Have a deep understanding of the pressures facing freshwater in Aotearoa, particularly in the Upper Clutha
• Are passionate about translating science into community-ready insights and practical action
• Want to support, mentor and constructively challenge the organisation
• Have Board or governance experience (not essential)
• Live locally or have strong connections to the Upper Clutha

Experience or interests in data integration, environmental information systems or catchment monitoring frameworks would also be beneficial.

Time Commitment

• The Board meets six times per year, in person, in Wanaka 
• Trustees also participate in a Committee or Advisory Group aligned with their expertise or interests
